The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s National Capital Area Chapter Announces Local 2010 Man & Woman of the Year
June 14, 2010? Led by Lisa Pagano of the Washington Nationals Baseball Club and Sean Geiger of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, 20 amazing individuals raised more than $852,000 for blood cancer research and patient services, as part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s (LLS) Man & Woman of the Year for the National Capital Area Chapter.
During the ten-week fundraising period beginning with a kickoff celebration on April 8, the candidates were judged on their success in raising money to help LLS fund research to find cures and better therapies and provide information and support to blood cancer patients and their families.
Every dollar raised counts as one "vote." Geiger and Pagano were the candidates with the most "votes," and were awarded the title of 2010 Man & Woman of the Year at a grand finale celebration on Saturday, June 12 at the Ritz-Carlton in DC. Pagano raised more than $81,700 and Geiger raised more than $69,000.
The candidates competed in honor of the 2010 Boy & Girl of the Year, Andrew Luckabaugh and Skyler Hundley, local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.
"LLS congratulates all of the candidates in the 2010 Man & Woman of the Year campaign. They each used their passion and determination to raise critical funds that give thousands of people battling blood cancers the chance to live better, longer lives and they are all champions," said Donna McKelvey, Executive Director of the National Capital Area Chapter. "This is a campaign that celebrates not only the individual accomplishments, but the collective success of all these amazing candidates."
Man of the Year candidates Jared Salvetti and Mark Cohen were also honored for their fundraising efforts and were named first and second runner up, respectively. As for the Women of the Year candidates, both Mary McLaughlin and Ria Freydberg were awarded with the first and second runner up titles, respectively.
The National Capital Area Chapter would also like to highlight the efforts of five candidates who raised more than $50,000 and will be awarded with an LLS research grant named in their honor. Those candidates are: Ria Freydberg, Sean Geiger, Mary McLaughlin, Lisa Pagano and Jared Salvetti.
Three Citizenship Awards were also given out to acknowledge the candidates who have significantly advanced the efforts to cure blood cancers by making exemplary contributions throughout their campaign. The campaign?s Leadership Team and peers reviewed each nomination and voted for the person who exemplified creativity, passion, outreach and leadership throughout the 10 weeks. The Mission Award was presented to Ria Freydberg. The Volunteerism Award was presented to Jared Salvetti. The Community Outreach Award was presented to Mary McLaughlin.
The evening included a silent auction, seated dinner and dancing. In addition, as a part of Adeler Jewelers? Jewel in the Box, guests purchased gemstones to benefit their favorite candidate?s campaign. Each guest that purchased a gemstone was entered into a drawing to win the grand prize, a luminous strand of cultured pearls with round diamond accents valued at $2,220!
The program was emceed by honorary co-chairs LLS Board Member, Brian Egan, and WJLA Good Morning Washington Anchor, Alison Starling. The 2010 campaign was co-chaired by Ken Dineen of Accenture and Allison Gurnitz of Coray Gurnitz Consulting.
