Why Participate
Why Participate?Over 1 million Americans currently battle blood cancers. Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed - an estimated 140,310 new people in 2011 alone. They are men, women, children, of every race and every age. Every ten minutes, someone dies from these cancers. Participation in The Man & Woman of the Year helps save lives! The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $814 million in research aimed at helping all blood cancer patients live better, longer lives. LLS will continue to support research and make a huge impact through their innovative and integrated funding programs, until every patient has a safe and effective therapy. Almost half of the new cancer drugs approved in the U.S. since 2000 (21/50) were approved to treat one or more blood cancer and LLS help advance most of them. In fiscal year 2011 alone, LLS supported research here in the US and abroad with a disbursement of $76million and also funds advocacy for lifesaving treatments as well as critically needed patient support services. |
