** UPDATE - WEEK 2 ** 4/5/17

Week 2 has begun, and as expected it’s already been a roller coaster of emotions. From having to open-up and communicating with so many new people about my mom’s journey with Leukemia so far, and my own inherent fears surrounding the challenges we are facing ahead as a family, needless to say this has been an incredibly cathartic start to my LLS - Man of The Year experience.

After such a great start in week 1, my mom wanted my next email out to everyone be directly from her, as she was bowled over at the amount of love and kindness you all shared so far. For a woman living with Cancer, her first response, was “this is going to help so man people”, because her mind inherently is built with others happiness and comfort first.

So here it is, Evie’s “Letter from my heart” ...

Everyone, I can’t begin to tell you how moved I am by everything Matty has shared with me last week. We all go through this life hoping for the best for our families, friends and ourselves. We wish all those we hold close to our hearts good health, happiness and success. Then one day we hear those difficult words from our doctor. You have CANCER and we know the impact it will have upon ourselves and our family and friends. There is no lonelier scarier feeling then experiencing this. So, we turn to our family and friends for support.

And then my son Matt was approached by LLS and found more support and a bigger family which enabled him to reach out to all of you who cared enough to give and support all of us who are affected by cancer. There are no words that could truly express how grateful I am to each and every one of you. You are all blessings in my life and in the lives of others who have been or will be affected by cancer. By giving to LLS you are all part of a journey towards the cure. What an enormous gift that is in this life to be a part something so important where you can help so many people by giving to this amazing organization.

Again, I am deeply moved by your heartfelt generosity. I wish each of you good health, long life and much happiness.

With love and sincere gratitude,

Evie (aka “Matt’s Ma”)

Hi, Friends, Family, Friends of Family and Strangers too!

I’m honored & excited to announce I have been nominated by my friend, colleague and former nominee Jacob Robinson
as a candidate for the 2017 Man & Woman of the Year campaign, a 10-week fundraising challenge that raises money for blood cancer research and benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I am pledging to give my time, energy, resources and passion to an organization that is truly saving lives, and I hope you’ll join me!

To kick things off, here is my story and why this is so important to me.....

Those of you who know me closely, know I am not the most openly expressive person emotionally, but now is a time I need to be as vulnerable and open as I can be, because for my family it feels like a matter of life and death. Almost 2 years ago my mother Evalynn or Evie, as most know her was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), after already spending the last 50 years of her life fighting her own body with Lupus.

CANCER is something you hear other people talk about getting, or how it touched someone close to them, but for mental self-preservation, we choose to believe we are invincible from it. Well my family has been touched by it a few times over now. My father too has fought and beat Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, my step father just endured a battle against colon cancer, and frankly I worry about the future of my own health, my brother, my niece and nephew and all the loved ones in my life. I accepted this challenge because I was so fortunate to be born to a woman who sacrificed everything for our comfort and happiness, and is still forced to have this fight ahead of her. If you know my mom, she is a kind, warm and compassionate woman, who I mean this with all sincerity would absolutely give you the shirt from her back or the food from her plate if you needed it. That made me think about how many other sons, daughters, parents and friends who have been effected by cancer too, and it stopped me cold in my tracks! This made me realize I am just not doing enough to help. I want to take the rest of the years of my life to make sure I am giving back, especially at a time where everything around usfeels a bit in chaos. I am committed to the fight to help find a cure for cancer, so my mom gets to live the long healthy life she deserves.

As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses, and thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund the therapies and treatments that save lives, not someday but today. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.

Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day. We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!

All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Please tell friends who would also like to donate! On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org

The Man & Woman of the Year campaign has concluded and the winners have been announced. However, we deeply appreciate your ongoing donation and support of LLS’s mission. To make an incredible impact not someday, but today click on the donate button.
