Why I want to be Woman of the Year

Apr 20, 2013
by Laura Winstead

A couple weeks after my 28th birthday, in February of 2010, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). I had been married for three years and our son was only 19 months when we got this news. After a very long 32 months of treatment including endless chemo sessions, daily fistfuls of pills, blood & platelet transfustions, give or take 9 bone marrow biopsies and 18 spinal taps... I finally finished treatment in October of 2012! I kept a blog through the whole ordeal so if you'd like to read more about my experience, you can visit Winstead Remission

Upon my diagnosis, the LLS gave us a check for $100 and together we explored options for assistance regarding the home pharmacy I now had to maintain. They are proactive with their patients and provide amazing patient programs. It's a wonderful organization and I want to give back however I can, even if it includes bugging my friends and family for money. I'm so proud to say I am currently going through training to be a 'First Connection' volunteer as well!

The other reason I accepted the nomination is because it would give me a platform to spread the word about how easy it is to be a bone marrow donor. In the past, it used to be a painful procedure invloving your hip and a giant needle. Now, in most cases, it's as easy as getting a few shots, then essentially giving blood. It saves lives; one day that life could be mine. The person who has the best chance of being a match for me, my sister, is not. If I were to ever need a transplant, my match is still out there.

Please support my campaign by making a (tax-deductable!) donation. Please share this on Facebook, Tweet it, tell your friends!
