Welcome to my Man & Woman of the Year home page!
Please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign. Every dollar I raise counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes /raises the most money is named the Man or Woman of the Year. I am running in honor of Dr. Broxson and my goal is to raise $50,000 to have a research grant named in his honor.
Below is a video of the LLS Honored Hero Young Lady of the Year Katie Hollingsworth who is also an AML Survivor and a patient of Dr. Broxson.
Dr. Broxson is the Director of Hematology/Oncology at Dayton Children's and I still see him in the long term follow-up clinic today. Without Dr. B I would not be here today. Without Dr. B I would have never known the feeling of getting married, having a son, graduating college, helping others fighting the same battle that I fought, or be a candidate for LLS Man of the Year. I feel very fortunate that I went through treatment at Dayton Children's. With doctors like Dr. Broxson and nurses like Karen Davis Dayton Children's helped me get through the hardest 8 months of my life.
I know all too well how devastating blood cancers are. On January 20th, 2002 I was diagnosed with Acute Monocytic Leukemia. I would spend the next 8 months inside of Dayton Children’s fighting for my life undergoing intensified chemotherapy. During those 8months I had several trips to the ICU, low blood pressure, liver failure, infections, and literally hundreds of platelet and blood transfusions. I nearly lost my life on several occasions. Just a few weeks after I registered for my first college class I was in the ICU fighting for my life. I remember sitting in my hospital bed watching cars drive on the highway and wishing that I was one of the “normal” people. The roller coaster that is chemotherapy was very hard for me. I had just turned 17, I was supposed to be playing sports with my friends, watching football games, enjoying my teenage years. But, instead I was stuck in a hospital bed with a 12 inch double lumen Broviac hanging from my chest staring at a bag of chemotherapy knowing that in a couple days when it “kicks in” I will likely be in the ICU fighting to live.
Now 12 years later I am in remission, happily married, have an awesome son James, and I am currently in college pursuing a Bachelors of Social Work degree with the hopes of one day working with pediatric oncology patients who are fighting the same battle that I fought.
Although my story has a happy ending, many don’t. Acute Monocytic Leukemia has only a 40% five year survival rate. This means that for every 40 happy endings, there are 60 endings where someone’s life was tragically cut short. We NEED more research for all blood cancers!
Thanks to your support, my efforts, will help fund the therapies and treatments and help save lives today.
LLS's continued advancements over the years, are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled.
All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
Please visit my Web site often and bring friends who would also like to donate! No donation is too BIG or too small!!
