HELP ME WIN AND CANCER LOSE

Without LLS I would sadly be running in memory of my dad and not in honor of him.  Please help me continue saving lives!

Laura French
Laura French is a wife, proud mother of three sons and a television news anchor and reporter for WTVR-TV CBS 6, in Richmond.  Laura has worked all over the country from local newsrooms to network as a consultant for CBS News 48 Hours. She has covered her share of tragedy in her 20 year career as a journalist, but some of her greatest challenges came from her personal experience with cancer.  Laura is a survivor herself.  She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after her second son was born and underwent surgery and treatment.   While Laura feels accomplished and fortunate, she considers her father the true fighter and a walking miracle.  Her dad Joe beat Acute Myeloid/Myelogenous Leukemia and a stem cell transplant. However, he lives in daily pain.  Therefore, Laura is passionate about the work the Leukemia and Lymphoma society is doing to save lives and provide a better quality of life for survivors like her father, Joe.  She feels humbled to be running for the 2017 Woman of the Year in honor of her dad, her hero.

Curled up in a chair, with no strength to move, a thin bruised arm reaches for the mountain of medication bottles that line his side table, but first he must insert his $10,000 speciality devices into each eye.

His morning pills are now in focus.  He fills his glass of water and prepares himself for the task ahead.  He takes a deep breath, squints his eyes and prepares to swallow.  As each pill makes its way down his throat, the pain intensifies as they brush against the sores that fill his mouth and line his esophagus, but he knows without them it will hurt more.  He takes the syringe out if its package and fills it with insulin.  As he grabs the little bit of belly fat he has left, he inserts the needle into his stomach.  He’s worn out and knows he needs nourishment but it hurts too much to eat and usually turns into a choking episode so he closes his eyes and goes back to sleep in his chair until the pain awakens him again.

“HE” is my dad, and this has been his daily life since August 14, 2008 when the words Acute Myeloid/Myelogenous Leukemia were first spoken to our family.  “Your father has AML and will die in a matter of months without a stem cell transplant,” said his doctor.  “We must find a match!” he added.  We found that match, and his sister saved his life.  However, even the strongest man I know, could not prepare for the months and years to follow.  Despite the grim prognosis, Joseph Heinzen, survived his transplant and to his doctors’ amazement is still alive today and is beating the odds.  He’s alive but not living.  In February, he suffered a massive heart attack as a result of his intense cancer treatment.  Dad, also suffers severe chronic graft-versus-host disease or GVHD.  GVHD occurs when the new stem cells attack your body.

Leukemia has beaten my father down physically and mentally.  It’s stripped him of his pride, relationships, his job and now his home of 20 years.  This disease has destroyed him financially and at times emotionally, but he still has a will to live and find a better quality of life as my 15 year old sister is depending on him.

When asked to represent the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a 2017 Woman of the Year candidate, without hesitation I proudly accepted.

Join Me.

In honor of my father, please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign for Man or Woman of the Year. I am part of team working to raise as much as possible in a 10-week period. Every dollar I raise counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes/raises the most money is named the Man or Woman of the Year.
But as you know, everyone wins when cancer loses, and thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund the therapies and treatments that save lives, not someday but today.
Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.
Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.
We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!
All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
Please visit my Web site often and tell friends who would also like to donate!
On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org
