Support Team Hockey Kicks Cancer!

Mar 12, 2015

Three years ago, a group of friends and I wanted to do something to bring the Pittsburgh hockey blogging together to both have fun and raise money for a charitable cause. Seeing as how the NHL supports The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with their Hockey Fights Cancer national campaign, we decided to support LLS in the spirit of our mutual love for the sport of hockey and a shared desire to help cancer patients and their families in our region.

What began as a tiny, 5 team event has grown beyond our expectations to 10-12 teams and a $40,000 donation to the Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. While we have a tremendous amount of fun and laughs at our event each year, we've grown together as friends. We hear stories from our teams and their families about how they appreciate what we are doing because of their personal connection to cancer.

You'd be hard pressed to find a person who hasn't been touched by cancer in some way. It's been 11 years since we lost my Nunny, my family's matriarch and the glue that held us together to pancreatic cancer. The hurt doesn't go away and we still miss her every day. I personally have never met my own dad's mother because she lost her battle with cancer before I was even born.

Please join me in supporting LLS by making a donation to my Woman of the Year campaign. Team Hockey Kicks Cancer have already been working for 3 months on various events and activities to help bring awareness. They put their heart and soul into our work and I couldn't ask for a more supportive and kind hearted group of people to be surrounded by. They do it because they truly believe in this cause.

More important than votes or competition though is the fact that the money you are donating really does and will affect lives. The Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia touches our immediate communities. I live in Allegheny County. From January 2013-July 2014, the chapter aided almost 6,000 families with their services. In just the city of Pittsburgh alone, LLS helped pay for approximately $74,000 in co-pays for patient treatments. That's just in the city of Pittsburgh. One city out of the entire footprint. Have you ever been to Beckley, West Virginia? It's beautiful. $11,900 in co-pays were covered in that 18 month period by the chapter. The list goes on and on!

It doesn't matter where you live in the country or the world. It doesn't matter if you donate $5.00 or $5,000 or a door prize for an event. Your contribution will help a neighbor in need.

All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

If you'd like to join in the fight against blood cancers, please check out my Hockey Kicks Cancer website for details on events in the Pittsburgh and Wheeling area. All events are open to the public and we'd love to meet you! Check back often as we continue to add events!

Thank you for your support! I cannot do this alone. Let's bring cancer one day closer to a cure!
