In Just 10 Weeks, Seven Outstanding Individuals Raise Over $110,000 for Lifesaving Cancer Research
GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 8, 2011)- Seven amazing individuals raised over $110,000 for blood cancer research and patient services, for this year's Man & Woman of the Year of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's South Carolina Chapter. During a ten -week fundraising period beginning with a kickoff celebration on March 18, the candidates were judged solely on their success in generating funds to advance the mission of LLS. Every dollar raised counts as one "vote". John Phillips and Jenny Gonzalez were the candidates with the most "votes," and were awarded the title of 2011 Man & Woman of the Year at a grand finale celebration at Zen on June 2, 2011. The candidates competed in honor of the Society's Boy & Girl of the Year, Davis Taylor and Caden Landreth, who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.
Woman of the Year, Jenny Gonzalez is the Director of Sports Medicine for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System. "I can't tell you how truly thankful I am for this opportunity. What an honor to be able to raise money on behalf of such an amazing organization!" says Gonzalez. Due to Jenny's efforts, she personally raised over $27,000. Man of the Year, John Phillips, AVP at SYNNEX Corporation, raised over $19,000 for the mission. He stats "I'd like to thank all of my family and friends for their support of me throughout this campaign as well as several local businesses who donated to the silent and live auction. It was a privilege for me to get to raise money in honor of Rich Groom, the Boy and Girl of the year, and in memory of my good friend Lance Vardy. I'd also like to thank my very strong competitors, Shannon Harvey and John DeWorken for pushing me to exceed my fund raising expectations. It was a lot of fun and very rewarding!"
The Man of the Year candidates were John DeWorken of The SUNNIE Harmon & John DeWORKEN Group, Shannon Harvey of Allstate Insurance and John Phillips of SYNNEX Corporation. The Woman of the Year were Beth Daniel, Philanthropist, Jenny Gonzalez of Bon Secours St. Francis Sports Medicine, Allyson Hudgins of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and Christine Selvaggio of Trendset Inc. & Brown Street Club.
"Everyone who participates in this important fundraising event is a hero to our organization," said Paul Jeter, Executive Director of the South Carolina Chapter of LLS. "Participation in Man & Woman of the Year is a great way for candidates to gain recognition in the Upstate and make a difference in the lives of nearly 1 million Americans living with blood cancers."
