Dayton's Honored Heroes
The Boy and Girl of the Year are local blood cancer survivors who help to serve as motivation and inspiration to the Man & Woman of the Year candidates in their competition to raise funds.
Meet Grace and Koby, our 2012 Honored Heroes
Girl of the Year - Grace SwisherGrace is 11 years old and currently in the 5th Grade in Springboro Schools. She was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia) when she was 3 1/2 years old in 2004. She endured 26 months of chemotherapy and has had a clean bill of health since!
Grace had the honor of being a "Hero" for her first time in 2008 at 7 years old. This is Grace's second time as being the "Hero," and now at 11 years old, she brings a completely different perspective with what she endured and for others fighting the battle.
At 11 years old, she maintains a typical 5th grade life on the outside - dancing, cheering, tumbling and playing wtih friends - but on the inside, she remains forever changed because of her fight.
Grace says "it's different for me though than for the other kids, because this is a chance I almost didn't have - life is extra special." Grace wants to give back and help others that are fighting leukemia and lymphoma.
Boy of the Year - Koby Stover
Koby was diagnosed on May 15, 2004 with Acute Lymphocytic Leikemia (ALL), he completed his last round of chemotherapy on July 12th, 2007 and is being monitored at DaytonChildren's Medical Center, and is doing well!
Koby lives with his mom and dad, Jenny and Trey, and has two siblings, Kayla and Trey, plus 3 dogs, 4 birds, 1 cat, a lizard and several fish! He is in the fourth grade at Orchard Park Elementary School. He is very active and enjoys playing football, basketball and wrestling. He is an honor roll student and member of the school safety patrol.
Koby loves Miami Heat, Bengals and Ohio State. He idolizes LeBron James. He enjoys riding his bikd or handing out with a group of boys playing basketball or football. He would be outdoors every chance he gets. But the days he can't go outside you will find him on his X-box.
