About The Leukemia & Lymphoma

Society

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world?s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $814 million in research funding.

The Suncoast Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is located in Tampa, Florida. The Suncoast Chapter area includes the ten Florida counties of Charlotte, Citrus, Desoto, Hardee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota. We have a full time Patient Services Manager on staff to assist patients and families battling these diseases.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s Mission

Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

How We Manage Our Money

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has dedicated itself to being one of the top rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund our mission. More than 76% of every dollar we spend is for cancer research, education, and advocacy and patient services. As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations to advance our mission.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Programs

Research: Since it?s founding in 1949, the Society has invested $814 million in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research. Society- funded research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancers and has produced new treatments to enhance and prolong lives. Innovations in cancer treatment over the years have included radiation and chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation and new targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal ones.

Patient Services: The Society has a network of 64 chapters in the United States and Canada. Each office conducts life-enhancing patient service programs, including support groups, peer counseling and patient financial aid. The Society also hosts numerous Webcasts and telephone education events, where medical professionals share the latest research, treatment and clinical trial findings.

Advocacy: The Society?s advocacy program promotes increased federal funding of biomedical research and influences healthcare reform issues, including ready access to quality cancer care and insurance coverage of patient-care costs to clinical trials.

Professional Education: The latest scientific and treatment advances are shared by the Society?s team of medical professionals through medical symposia, educational events, the Web and printed materials.

History

The Man & Woman of the Year event has been one of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s signature events since 1990. In 2011 The Man & Woman of the Year Campaign celebrated 21 years resulting in nearly 2 million dollars raised for research and patient services.

The Competition

Candidates competing for the title of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man & Woman of the Year are judged solely on a philanthropic basis ? on their success in generating funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Candidates raise these funds in honor of the Boy and Girl of the Year, local children who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer. The male and female candidate who raise the most funds after the ten week campaign are crowned The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s 2012 Man & Woman of the Year.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s Man & Woman of the Year winners receive great prizes, as well as being highlighted on billboards and in various media outlets in the bay area during the 2012-2013 season. The Suncoast Chapter proudly has the 2003 and 2005 "National Man of the Year"!

Kick-Off Reception February 15, 2012

The Kick Off reception is a cocktail celebration for the candidates and their supporters.
